Dispersion of light is a phenomenon when white light is passed through a glass prism it splits into 7 colours.

The colours are:

  • violet
  • indigo
  • blue
  • green
  • yellow
  • orange
  • red

In other words, when light splits into its 7 constituent colours, it is known as dispersion.

NOTE: SEE WEB VERSION FOR FIGURE (IN CASE YOU CANT SEE THE FIGURE).

Dispersion can happen when a medium changes the direction and wavelength of light. Examples of such mediums are prisms, raindrops, etc.
