When a liquid is cooled, its intermolecular forces of attraction increase and the intermolecular spaces decreases , and the temperature of the liquid decreases, thus the kinetic energy of the molecules decreases,so the molecules gradually come closer to each other. At a certain temperature called the freezing point of the liquid, the temperature and the kinetic energy stops decreasing and the intermolecular potential energy decreases, thus changing its state from liquid to solid. In this way, freezing occurs.
