The physiographic factors responsible for the distribution pattern of railway network in India are:-

1. The Northern Plains provided the best scope for the growth of railways due to the growth of agriculture, large population, and vast economic potential.

2. In the peninsular regions, railway tracks were laid through low hills, tunnels, or gaps.

3. The contiguous stretches of Sahyadri could only be crossed through gaps or passes.

4. It was difficult to lay tracks in the forested tracks of states like Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, swamps of Gujarat, and desert sands of Rajasthan, etc.

5. Railway tracks could not be laid in the Himalayan region due to dissected relief, sparse population and low economic prosperity.

6. The building of bridges over some rivers in the Northern Plains posed a problem to railways.

The economic factors are:-

1. Railway lines are mostly laid in those states or regions which are technologically and economically advanced.

2. The transport of industrial goods involves railways so railways are laid in those regions which are industrially prosperous.

3. Moreover, railways are also laid in those regions where agriculture is highly advanced for efficient transportation of goods at high speeds.

4. Conversely, railway lines are not laid in those regions which are economically backward.
