The divide and rule policy was a strategy used by the British to weaken the Indian powers. They did so by creating a problems between the different communities/kingdoms in India. When the different groups with fought each other and weakened themselves the British could easily take over them .

A very good example is the partition of Bengal, 1905.

The policy of divide and rule was mostly applied on rebel people. Hindu communities were pitted against Muslim community. Muslim community was pitted against Sikh community. Princely states were affected if the King did not have a son to inherit the throne. The Kings, Chiefs and Nawabs became aware of the military and financial strength of British administration. Slowly most of them fell in line with British rule. Those opposed were crushed by British administration. The divide and rule policy affected the common people and created communal tensions. The Princes and Chiefs had good relation irrespective of religion.
