What actually was the divide and rule policy of the British government? Examples please.

Unity was the power for Indians during Independence movement. But we had a weakness that British tried to exploit - diversity. We had many diversified traditions, beliefs and customs. The British tried to break our unity by dividing us on the lines of caste, religions and languages. They were the one who offered every regional political powers aka Princely States a choice of nationality that could break India into more than 100 pieces thus effectively dividing it apart. But fortunately, due to efforts of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, this Balkanization of India never happened. But unfortunately Pakistan came into existence due to the efforts of Jinnah. Even the partition of India was supported by the British. All these were the part of divide and rule policy by the crown rule.

''Divide and rule policy is a policy under which rulers divide people in small groups,so they cannot rebel against the state. These policies were followed by many europeans states in order to colonize developing or undeveloping.

AS a result the kings/princes handed over the states to the british as gratitude. They singed policy by which british gained powers in their states. The british started by establishing the trading companies in india but directly ruled over it from 1858-1947.
