Answer:
What are the powers and functions of the Supreme Court?
Powers and Functions of the Supreme Court –
(1) Original Jurisdiction - Original jurisdiction refers to cases that have come directly to the High Court, without any prior judicial decision.
(2) Appellate Jurisdiction - Appellate jurisdiction refers to the power of a court to hear appeals from lower courts.
(3) Protection of the Constitution - The Equal Protection Clause is from the text of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. The clause, which took effect in 1868, provides "nor shall any State ... deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws".
(4) Power to Interpret the Constitution - The responsibility of interpreting the constitution rests on the Supreme Court. The interpretation of the constitution which the Supreme Court shall make must be accepted by all. It interprets the constitution and preserves it. Where a case involves a substantial question of law as to the interpretation of the constitution either certified by the High Court or being satisfied by the Supreme Court itself, an appeal shall lie to the Supreme Court for interpretation of the question of law raised.
(5) Power of Judicial Review - The best-known power of the Supreme Court is judicial review, or the ability of the Court to declare a Legislative or Executive act in violation of the Constitution, is not found within the text of the Constitution itself. The Court established this doctrine in the case of Marbury v. Madison (1803).
(6) Court of Record - The Supreme Court of India shall be a court of record and shall have all the powers of such a court including the power to punish for contempt of itself.
(7) Administrative Functions- Administrative functions means functions normally associated with the routine operation of government, including tax assessment and collection, personnel services, purchasing, records management services, data processing, warehousing, equipment repair, and printing.
