The principle of the potentiometeris that: For a wire having uniform area of cross section and uniform composition,the potential drop is directly proportional to the length of wire. The above principle is valid when potentiometer is used in comparing the EMF of two cells

=) It works on the principle that potential difference across any part of a uniform wire is directly proportional to the length of the wire . When a constant current flow to a wire.

Let V be the potential difference across end of wire length (l) , resistance (R) and uniform area of cross section (A) . If (I) current flow through the wire . Then , acc. to ohm's law .

V = I R

Resistance ,

R = pl / A

V = pl / A × I

V = K l

Where ,

K = pI / A

that is , V  ∝ l

Extra Information about potentiometer :-

(i) It is of large size .

(ii) It's sensitivity is very high .

(iii) It is very accurate device .

(iv) It works on null method .

(v) No current is drawn by it from the cell to be measured .
