Principle of Vernier Calliper:

The principal of a Vernier Calliper is to make \sf{'N'} Vernier Scale divisions equal to \sf{'N-1'} Main Scale divisions.

Generally, the Standard Vernier Scale is provided with \sf{10} graduations to coincide with \sf{9} Main Scale divisions.
