Glucose contains 6 carbon molecules which is break down in the cytoplasm by the process of glycolysis and is converted into pyruvate which contains 3 carbon molecule. In the absence of oxygen it  break down into ethanol+carbondioxide +2ATP energy this process takes place in yeast or in the lower organisms . In the presence of oxygen it breaks into carbon dioxide + water + 36/38ATP energy it takes place in mitochondria or in higher organisms. More energy is released in aerobic respiration as compared to anaerobic respiration. Complete oxidation takes place in aerobic respiration whereas incomplete oxidation takes place in anaerobic respiration.
