first of all breakdown of glucose occurs by 10 steps and the whole process is known as glycolysis which leads to formation of 2 molecules of pyruvic acid
this process takes place in cytoplasm

now pyruvic acid undergoes fermentation to form alcohol or undergoes anaerobic respiration to form lactic acid in presence of limited amount of oxygen

in presence of excess oxygen it undergoes krebs cycle and electron transport system leads to formarion of atp(energy currency of cell)
