In biological terms, humandevelopment entails growth from a one-celled zygote to an adult human being. Fertilisation occurs when the sperm cell successfully enters and fuses with an egg cell (ovum). ... During this stage, the zygote begins to divide, in a process called cleavage.

Process of cleavage in human beings:
- Cell division occurs by either of the two processes, that is mitosis or meiosis (not in the case of somatic cells).
- Cleavage as per embryology means the repeated divisions of cells of Zygote in the embryo to form a ball of cells called Morula.
- Morula further repetitively divided through mitosis to form a "hollow ball of cells" called Blastula.
- To conclude, the zygote formed by the combination of the egg and the sperm is divides repetitively twice to form a ball of cells which is called Blastula.
