About 300 million years ago, Earth had dense forests in low lying wet areas. Due to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, these forests got buried under the soil.As more soil deposited over them, they were compressed.The temperature also raised as they sank deeper and deeper. Due to oxygen and high temperature, dead plants inside the earth got slowly converted to coal. As coalcontains mainly carbon, the slow process of conversion of dead vegetation into coal is termed as "CARBONISATION".

Since it was formed from the remains of vegetation, coal is called as a fossil fuel...
