The earliest kind of print technology was developed in China.

From the beginning of 594 AD, books were printed by rubbing paper over the surface of painted woodblocks

.

Books were even printed for the common masses. Books were printed for the civil services examination.The Imperial State would fund the printing.

By the 17th century, print in China diversified. Merchants would use print to collect trade information and women began to read as well.

Reading became a leisure activity and many books came to be written during this period.
