Coal was formed from forests which got buried under earth's crust millions of years ago during earthquakes, volcanoes etc. These fossils got covered with sand, clay and water. Due to high temperature, high pressure and absence of air inside the earth, fossils got converted into coal by incomplete combustion and other slow chemical changes. This process of conversion of dead matter buried inside the earth to coal is called carbonization. It is a very slow process and may have taken thousands of years.
