The Process of formation of Petroleum:

  • Petroleum is a rare and widely used fossil fuel. It is derived after long drawn aerobic reduction and decaying of organisms like algae and zooplankton.
  • These organisms are present in the sea and surrounded by loads of water without oxygen or stagnant water.
  • The anaerobic bacteria reduces to sulfates and nitrates in the absence of oxygen.
  • The bacteria began to combine to form Kerogen.
  • This formation takes place to an expanse of 1km. Then by catagenesis, the rearrangement of the particles of kerogene takes place.
  • This happens during a period of thousands to million years and ultimately results in the fuel which we term as petroleum.
