Hybridization happens when atomic orbitals mix to form a new atomic orbital. The new orbital can hold the same total number of electrons as the old ones. ... The concept of hybridization was introduced because it was the best explanation for the fact that all the C - H bonds in molecules like methane are identical.

Answer:

What is hybridization? Explain the different types of hybridization with suitable examples.

Hybridisation is the mixing atomic orbitals to form new hybrid orbitals.

sp hybridisation: one s orbital and one p orbital undergo hybridisation, froming 2 equivalent sp orbitals which are arranged 180degree to each other.

Eg. hybridisation of C in O=C=O is sp (2bond pair(bp), 0 lone pair(lp))

sp2 hybridisation: one s orbital and 2 p orbital undergo hybridisation, forming 3 equivalent sp2 orbitals which are arranged 120degree to each other

Eg. hybridisation of C in H2C=CH2 is sp2 (3bp, 0 lp)

sp3 hybridisation: one s orbital and 3 p orbital undergo hybridisation, forming 4 equivalent sp3 orbitals which are arranged 109.5degree to each other

E.g hybridisation of C in CH4 is sp3 (4bp, 0 lp)

This concept can be applied to other elements including O and N by number of bond and lone pairs.
