inspiration is the stage of breathing during which atmospheric air is drawn inland.the movement of air into lungs is carried out by creating a pressure gradient between lungs and atmosphere.
inspiration can occur if the pressure within the lungs (intra pulmonary pressure) is less than the atmospheric pressure .The diaphragm and a specialized set of muscles I.e external and internal coastals between ribs ,help in the generation of such gradients .
inspiration is initiated by the contraction of diaphragm which increases the volume of thoracic chamber in the antero-posterior axis.contraction lifts up the ribs & sternum causing increase in vol. of thoracic chamber in dorso ventral axis the overall increase in thoracic vol. causes a similar increase in pulmonary vol. an increase in pulmonary vol decrease the intra pulmonary pressure to less than atmospheric pressure which forces the air from outside to move into the lungs this is called as inspiration . .hope this helps u
