Leguminious plants like pea , bean and gram etc. have root nodules .

These nodules have a bacteria called rhizobium bacteria . This bacteria converts atmospheric nitrogen into useful nitrogenous compounds and increase the soil fertility . This is called nitrogen fixation .

● This is because the plants cannot take atmospheric nitrogen directly .
