Amoeba takes food using finger like extension of cell surface called pseudopodia. These pseudopodia fuse to form food vacuole. Food is digested in food vacuole and then diffuses into the cytoplasm. The undigested food moves on surface and thrown out.

Nutrition in Amoeba

  • About Amoeba - It is a unicellular, omnivore organism.

The mode of nutrition in Amoeba = holozoic.

It takes place with the help of pseudopodia (finger-like projections).

It engulfs the food when it comes in contact with its cell  surface by ingestion.

Pseudopodia wicks over the food particle to form a food vacuole.

Inside the food vacuole, complex food fragments into small soluble molecules and gets readily grasped by the cytoplasm, i.e. absorption. The undigested food material is removed by the cell membrane, which breaks suddenly at any place and discharges out the undigested food, i.e. egestion
