our hand shrinks if we wash our hand in soap for a long time because water concentration is higher in our hands than outside medium

The process of movement of water from higher concentration to lower concentration through plasma membrane is called osmosis.

For ex.

  • if an object is kept in hypertonic solution the cell loses water and shrinks if cell is kept in hypotonic solution the cell swells up.
