For Animals:

The process of taking in of oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide outside the body is known as Respiration.

For plants :

The process of taking in carbon dioxide (in the process of photosynthesis) and releasing out oxygen is known as respiration.

But there are some bacteria for whom oxygen is poisonous. So , they do respiration with the help of nitrogen.

The oxygen which is taken in is utilised to oxide the chemical energy in the form of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) with water and carbon dioxide.

In short we can say that respiration is the process of exchange of gases.

We human beings do respiration with the help of some organs, which include - nostrils, nasal cavity, larynx, bronchi, bronchioles ending in alveoli. These organs form our respiratory system.

That's all !!
