Respiration in terrestial organisms is performed through a system called the respiratory system.

Lungs were a huge advantage because these creatures were able to go onto land and escape their predators in the ocean. Also, if they were living in a water environment where the oxygen content was low, they would be able to breathe from the air and survive where their fellow gill-breathers could not.

♤The amount of oxygen dissolved in water is fairly low as compared to the amount of oxygen present in air.

♤ the rate of breathing in aquatic organisms is much faster than that seen in terrestrial organisms.

♤ Fishes take in water through there mouth and force it past the gills where the dissolved oxygen is taken up by the blood.
