When iron reacts with water in the presence of air and dust to formits oxides ,this process is called rusting.
Or
When any iron (object or) surface is continuously in contact with moisture and air, we can see the surface of that object starts turning red. That red layer is formed because iron reacts chemically with the moisture and forms iron oxide. This red layer of iron oxide is called rust and this process is called as rusting.

Rusting: It is defined as the slow decay of iron metal in the presence of air and moisture where materials made of iron are deteriorated and a brown substance called rust is deposited on their surface.
