In the medieval period the Rajputs formed small states. A specific Rajput ruler owned each state. For example: the Chauhans, the Chandels, the Sholankis, etc. No one king ruled the entire Rajput kingdom. So each kingdom or state was ruled by an individual ruler. There was not much peace and harmony among these rulers and they were not united during foreign invasions. The boundaries of these states constantly kept changing because the rulers were engaged in wars among them to expand their territories. Zamindars were given land by the kings and they collected taxes on behalf of the king.
