it is the process by which a substance undergoes conversion from the solid phase to the gas phase, without going through an intermediate liquid phase. 
ex-  iodine - it visibly sublimates 
at room temperature. In contrast to carbon dioxide  , though, it is possible to obtain liquid iodine at atmospheric pressure by heating it.
