Transcription
- The process of copying the genetic information from one strand of the DNA into RNA is called transcription.
- The process of transcription is governed by the principle of complementarity.
- During transcription, only a segment of DNA and only one of its strand is copied into RNA.
- It is because if both the strands are copied they would code for RNA molecule with different sequences.
- The sequences of amino acids in protein synthesised by the two strands of DNA segment would be different.
- It would complicate the genetic information mechanism.
- If two RNA molecules produced, they would be complementary to each other and form a double stranded RNA this could prevent translation.
