during d middle of 19th century, Italy was divided into seven states. during 1830 Mazzini decided 2 unite italy . he had formed a secret society young Italy 2 achieve his goal. after earlier failures in 1831 & 1848 king Victor Emmanuel - I I took 2 unify Italian states through wars.
through a tactful diplomatic alliance wid France by Cavour succeeded in defeating d Austrian force in 1859. in 1861 victor Emmanuel I I was proclaimed king of united Italy.
