Classical dance of India has developed a type of dance-drama that is a form of a total theater. ... The criteria for being considered as classical is the style's adherence to the guidelines laid down in Natyashastra, which explains the Indian art of acting.

Dance in India comprises numerous styles of dances, generally classified as classical or folk. As with other aspects of Indian culture, different forms of dances originated in different parts of India, developed according to the local traditions and also imbibed elements from other parts of the country.

Sangeet Natya Academy, the national academy for performing arts in India, recognizes eight traditional dances as Indian classical dances, while other sources and scholars recognize more.These have roots in the Sanskrit text Natya Shastra,[1] and the religious performance arts of Hinduism.

Folk dances are numerous in number and style and vary according to the local tradition of the respective state, ethnic or geographic regions. Contemporary dances include refined and experimental fusions of classical, folk and Western forms. Dancing traditions of India have influence not only over the dances in the whole of South Asia, but on the dancing forms of South East Asia as well. Dances in Indian films like Bollywood Dance for Hindi films, are often noted for freeform expression of dance and hold a significant presence in popular culture of the Indian subcontinent.

Growth of Indian dance

The earliest Neolithic and paleolithic cave painting at bhimbetka rock shelter in MP show dance scenes.

The dancing girl sculpture traced to Indus valley civilization is dated around 2500 BCE.Several other sculpture found there also show dancing figures.

Vedic time- The word "Nritya" has been mentioned in several texts dating to the Vedic period. People were well aware of the art of dancing.It was used in social functions,public performances etc.

"Natyashastra"an important ancient text of classical dance which is still available is attributed to sage Bharat a master of music. It dates from 300 BCE to 300-AD.

Dhrupad and dhamar style of singing initiated in late Mughal period but dance was used mainly for cheap pleasure and was associated with prostitutes.

Bharatnatyam’, ‘Kathakali’, ‘Kuchipudi bloomed during the period of Krishnadev Rai(1509- 1529) of Vijaynagar kingdom.

British India- The Europeans was fascinated with the indian traditions of dance and music.They watched the Indian dance and music and gave it a platform on the international stage .

There was also a western influence on the Indian traditions.

Many famous artist emerged during the time such as Uday shankar ,Rukmini Devi, Padma Subrahmanyam ,Ram gopal etc.

Uday shankar is considered as the father of the modern dance in India.He created a fusion of the western dance with Indian traditions.

Governement after independence has contributed to preserve our ancient traditions.

In 1954, Sangeet Natak academy was established for the same.

Some of the most famous personalities associated with Indian dance are Pandit Birju Maharaj, Sri Uday Shankar, Kelucharan Mohapatra etc. Some famous artists were discussed above also.
