The reservation policy was introduced to improve the educational and social status of underprivileged communities like scheduled caste, scheduled tribes and other backward communities for their better living. The reservation is governed by statutory and constitutional laws, as well as local rules and regulations.

The reservation policy was launched in 1959. According to a ruling by the Supreme Court in 1992, the maximum reservation allowed was 50%.
