The pumping cycle :

Blood from the body enters the right atrium through large blood vessels called the Vena cava. Blood from the lungs enters the left atrium through the pulmonary vein. The atria contract together, pushing blood into the ventricles.

From the left ventricle, blood the pulmonary artery. Both ventricles contract at the same time. You can easily measure your heartbeat by taking a pulse.

Every contraction of the atria and ventricles called heartbeat. In fact, there is really a double beat since the atria contract just before the ventricles. This is important if blood is to flow through the heart in the right direction.

Fact :

Some athletes have a heartbeat of more than 200 beats per minute.
