First of all the pythagoras theorem was discovered by pythagoras . ab^2 + bc^2 = ca^2 . This theorem applies only if the triangle is right-angled.

Example : 12 and 5 .

12^2 = 144

5^2 = 25

144+25

169 is square of 13 so 13 is the third side.
