Answer:

It may look like polystrene " melts" when petrol (gasoline) is poured on it. However, the petrol is actually dissolving the polystrene. In chemistry, there is a common saying that " like dissolves like" . polystrene is an alkene and petrol has several alkene in it { benzene( upto 5 % by volume) , toluene ( upto 35% by volume) , naphthalene ( upto 1% by volume) , and trymethylbenzene ( upto 7 % by volume) } which aid in the dissolving of the polystrene. Now the characteristics of both the ingredients are lost and a new product is formed. This product show the character of neither a solid nor a liquid. It is a translucent material which is brownish and yellowish white in colour and with viscosity more than that of a liquid and less than that of a solid . While studying the properties of the materials formed , it is found that it looks like glue and can be used as a strong adhesive .

Answer:Petrol (gasoline) is mixture of hydrocarbons with the formula C(n)H(2n+2). ... So when petrol and thermocol mix, no reaction happens. BUT, the thermocol will dissolve in the petrol. Try it- the packing foam that comes in many delivery boxes is made of polystyrene.
