explain the reaction of metal and non metal with water, oxygen, acids and bases.
Answers
★ Reaction with oxygen ------------»
Metals reacts with oxygen to form metallic oxides. Metallic oxides are basic in nature
Metal + Oxygen ————› Metal oxide
When magnesium magnesium ribbon is burnt, it reacts with oxygen to make magnesium oxide.
2Mg + O2 —————› 2MgO
Magnesium Oxygen magnesium oxide
Non - metals react with oxygen to form non metallic oxides. non metallic oxides are acidic in nature.
Non-metal + Oxygen ————› non - metal oxide
★ Reaction with acids ---------------»
Most of the metals react with dilute acid to make metal salts and liberate hydrogen gas. Some metals; like copper and lead do not react with dilute hydrochloric acid. They react with sulfuric acid and nitric acid but do not liberate hydrogen gas and gold do not react with acids at all.
Metal + acid ————› metal salt + hydrogen
Fe (s) + 2HCl (aq) ————› FeCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)
★ Reaction with bases --------------»
When bases react with metal then it produces salt and hydrogen (g) . actually/generally all non metal do not react with bases , because when the reaction of bases take place it produces H+ ions . Hence the conclusion comes that non metal are not reacted with bases.
• During the reaction with metal :-----
Metal + base ————› Salt + water hydrogen
Zn + NaOH ———› Na2ZNo2 + H2

• During the reaction with non-metal :----
6HNO3 + S - H2SO4 + 6NO3 + 2H2O
