The effect of the war was felt within the US. Many were critical of the government for getting involved in a war that they saw as indefensible.

 2. The anger was further spread as many of the youth who were sent to fight did not belong to the privileged elite but were minorities and children of working-class families. Also, the compulsory service in the armed forces could be waived away for university graduates.

3. The U.S. media and films played a major role in both supporting as well as criticising the war. For example the Hollywood film - John Wayne's Green Berets (1968) has been cited as an unthinking propaganda film responsible for motivating many young men to die in the war. Francis Ford Coppola's Apolcalypse Now (1979) reflected the moral confusion that the war had caused in the US.

The U.S. government viewed its involvement in the war as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam. This was part of the domino theory of a wider containment policy, with the stated aim of stopping the spread of communism.
The protests against the war soon combined with protests against President Richard M. Nixon's cover up of the bugging of Democratic Headquarters in the Watergate Hotel, Washington, D.C., which led to the Watergate inquiry and ultimately his resignation in early August 1974. All this produced a deep crisis of confidence in the U.S. government. This, in turn, led to the passing by Congress of acts restricting presidential war powers. However, while U.S. domestic turmoil was an important aspect of the war, it was far from being the only one.

In fact, the Vietnam war had four key aspects:

(1) The goals and methods of the Vietnamese communists led by Ho chi Minh;

(2) U.S. involvement in Vietnam, how it came about and why the U.S. was defeated;

(3) Domestic protest in the U.S;

(4) Soviet and Chinese policy toward North Vietnam, which stemmed from rivalry for predominant influence in that country.
effects of vietnam war are as follows
(a) (i) Even though the U.S. had advanced technology and good medical supplies, casualties were high.
(ii) About 47,244 died in battle and 3,03,704 were wounded who became 100% disabled.
(iii) The phase of struggle with the U.S. was brutal.
(iv) Widespread attacks and use of chemical weapons (Napalm), bombs destroyed many villages and decimated jungles. Civilians died in large numbers.
(b) (i) The effect of the war was felt within the U.S. as well.
(ii) Many were critical of the U.S. joining the war.
(iii)Anger spread when youth were recruited for the war.
(iv) Compulsory service in the armed forces was waived off for university graduates.
(v) Only minorities and children of working-class families were sent to war.
