In March 1947 Lord Mountbatten was the last viceroy of India. In June he presented a plan for the partition of India into two independent states- India and Pakistan
The Congress members agreed to this to avoid further bloodshed between Hindus and Muslims. Mahatma Gandhi who wanted Hindus and Muslims to be united, accepted the partition.
The Partition's results were a total chaos. Lakhs of people were displaced, property loss and lives destroyed.
