At the time of sunrise or sunset, the position of the sun is very far away from us(at the horizon). therefore the distance of the sun from the observer is very long . hence the sunlight  which is made up of seven colours will scatter light while travelling towards the earth . of these, red colour has more wavelenght than other colours . therefore they are least scattered and can reach ours eyes with the reddish appearance as other colours with least wavelenght gets scattered away

Hence, the sun and the sky appear red.

hope it helps!!!
