Sex ratio is worse in most among Sub-Saharan, Arab and South Asian Countries. The below picture provides a snapshot of the sex ratio in our world.

All the reasons leading to the depletion of female population are very deeply interrelated. Let's start with:
1. The parents in most of the backward regions of India consider sons to be a blessing and daughters as a burden.
2. The fact that the daughters in India tend to change their last name to their husband's leads to the question in the mind of the same parents - "Humara vansh aage kaun badhayega?" (who'll carry our family name forward?)
3. The fact that the practice of dowry still is performed in many parts of the country, it might have modernised in its form, but it is still very much practiced.
4. Educating a daughter is believed to be useless - as in the end they've to get married and become a homemaker for someone else's house.
5. There's no "benefit" (probably monetary) in raising a daughter.
6. Earlier sex selective abortion was at large, until the government of India banned it. It is still illegally and secretively done in parts of this great nation.
7. Hence the shift to female feticide.
8. Practises like sati and the high frequency of rapes in India are a highly motivating factor for females to commit suicide.
To have a decent sex ratio, what we need is a decent mentality and open minded attitude towards life. Till then, we can only hope the laws are good enough to not let the situation get worse.
