Qila Rai Pithora rose as a city due to the reason of its geographical location and the ruling decisions of Prithvi Raj Chauhan III.

At first he, Prithvi Raj Chauhan III took over Lal Kot, 1180 AD. Next he decided to make extensive renovations to the existing structure. Thus he extended the citadel by building massive ramparts around it.

This was made in a gated fort for the cause of protection from invaders.  This also came to be known as the capital city.

The Qila Rai Pithora was built in the 12th century by Prithivraj Chauhan, after capturing Delhi from the Tomar Rajputs.

It was built by annexing the Lal Kot built by Tomars in the 8th century. The Tomars, Chauhans and rulers of the Slave dynasty used this fort as their headquarters to rule over Delhi from the 12th to 13th century.

The Lal Kot which was old fashioned, was redone and extended by Prithivraj Chauhan. It stretched almost 6 kilometres with the city inside it.
