If HYDRA is transversely sliced into annular segments then each segment gives rise to new hypostome anteriorly and the basal part posteriorly.

Hydra when transversely sliced into annular segments, each segment grows into an individual Hydra by the process of regeneration.

Each of the segment gives rise to a hypostome distally (anteriorly) and a basal part proximally (posteriorly). Regeneration begins with closure of the wound. The damaged surface is then covered by ectoderm which forms a sheet of epithelial cells.

Large numbers of cells are produced from the growth zone towards the cut surface. Each piece then regenerates to form a complete miniature hydra.
