Of all the peasant revolts in India, The Canara revolt was one of the important ones.
Mangalore was then called as Canara. It included many districts from the now Dakshina Karnataka and Uttara Karnataka regions. In 1857, as a part of the peasant revolts, Canara also became the center of many revolutionaries for the British.
The main issues of the peasants living in the Canara region were the uprising land taxes and salt taxes. Many leaders in this area were fighting for the cause to decrease the taxes. Many leaders kept dying and many were springing up again. The peasants had to sell their products and resources to pay the revenue to the colonial government. This revolt was going on for almost 3 years.
Finally the British made a decision to divide the Canara district and the Uttara Karnataka region called the Karwar was handed over in 1862 to the Bombay Presidency.
