Out of the many peasant revolts in India, one of the most important was the Canara revolt. The present district of Mangalore was called as Canara during the British colonial period. Many districts from the present Uttara Karnataka and Dakshina Karnataka regions were included. As a part of the peasant revolts in 1857, Canara became the center for many British revolutionaries.

The main revolt issues of the peasants who were living in the Canara district was the increased revenue due to the increasing salt and salt taxes. Many leaders kept fighting for this cause. The peasants were forced to sell their resources in order to pay the taxes and the revenue to the colonial government. This revolt went on for 3 years. Finally,
in 1862, the Britishers decided to divide Canara district and gave away the Karwar or the Uttara Karnataka region to the Bombay Presidency.
