The revolt of 1857 had many political, military,religious and social causes.A militrian of Bengal introduced a new rifle called the Enfield Rifle in the month of February 1857. A rumour was spread that the cartridges were made from cows and pig fat.when loading the rifle it is required tearing open the greased cartridge with one's teeth.This would have insulted both Hindu and Muslim religious practices; cows were considered holy by Hindus, while pigs were considered unclean by Muslims.

this led to thr Revolt also called the Rebellion of 1857.

THE REVOLT OF 1857 ALSO KNOW AS FIRST WAR OF INDEPENDENCE!

IT WAS STARTED ON MAY 10, 1857 WITH THE MUTINY OF SOLDIERS IN MEERUT CANTONMENT.

THE REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIERS MARCHED TOWARDS DELHI. ON MAY 11 1857, DELHI WAS MUTE WITNESS TO A VAND OF SEPOYS WHO CROSSED IVER THE RIVER YAMUNA AND ENTERED THE RED FORT.THEY APPEALED TO THE AGED MUGHAL EMPEROR BAHADUR SHAH, AN EMPEROR WITHOUT ANY AUTHORITY, TO TAKE OVER THE LEADERSHIP OF THE REVOLT.HE WAS PROCLAIMED THE SHAHENSHA-E-HINDUSTAN . THE SEPOY CAPTURED THE CITY OF DELHI , KILLED MANY ENGLISHMEN AND RANSACKED MANY PUBLIC OFFICES.

THOUGH THE REVOLT WAS STARTED BY THE INDIAN SOLDIERS IN THE SERVICE OF EAST INDIA COMPANY, IT SOON SPREAD TO DIFFERENT PARTS OF COUNTRY. DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF THE SOCIETY LIKE PEASANTS,ARTISANS, SOLDIERS, EDUCATED INDIANS AND MANY INDIAN RULERS JOINED HANDS TO FIGHT HEROCIALLY AGAINST THE FOREIGN RULE. HINDUS AND MUSLIMS ALSO CAME TOGETHER TO OPPOSE THE FOREIGN DOMINATION.

CAUSES OF THE REVOLT:-

POLITICAL CAUSES:- (a) The policy of annexation like doctrine of lapse created fear and resentment among Indian Rulers as they were not allowed to adopt heir to the thrown, their kingdom would be taken over by the british after his/her demise.

2] ECONOMIC CAUSE:- (a) The zamindari system exploited the peasants who were forced to grow only commercial crops.

3.] SOCIAL AND RELIGIOUS CAUSE :- (a) The social reforms made by the British were considered and interference in the custom and tradition of the Hindus.

4.] MILITARY CAUSE :- (a) There was discrimination between Indian and British Soldiers.

(b) The highest pay given to an Indian Sepoy as subedar was less then the minimum pay of european recruits.

5.] IMMEDIATE CAUSE :- (a) The revolt of 1857 was called the first war of Independence because it was the first time that different section of Indian Society fought as one nation to throw off the shackles of foreign domination.
