The revolt of 1857 had many political, military, religious and social causes.A militrian of Bengal introduced a new rifle called the Enfield Rifle in the month of February 1857. A rumour was spread that the cartridges were made from cows and pig fat.when loading the rifle it is required tearing open the greased cartridge with one's teeth. This would have insulted both Hindu and Muslim religious practices; cows were considered holy by Hindus, while pigs were considered unclean by Muslims.
this led to thr Revolt also called the Rebellion of 1857.
