In dicot plants cotyledons are photosynthetic and function like leaves . the cotyledons are the first part to emerge from the soil. some cotyledons last only for few days and give way to other plant to grow, while some cotyledon last for years. it is important for the new plant as it stores the food which the new plant required to grow and the seed gives the burst of energy to the initial plant to grow

Answer:

Cotyledon, seed leaf within the embryo of a seed. Cotyledons help supply the nutrition a plant embryo needs to germinate and become established as a photosynthetic organism and may themselves be a source of nutritional reserves or may aid the embryo in metabolizing nutrition stored elsewhere in the seed.
