The Parliament is the most important symbol of Indian democracy and a key feature of the Constitution. It enables the citizens of India to participate in decision making and control the government. Moreover, the Parliament has very important role to play in democracy, such as:

  • Executive role/functions

  • Financial role/functions

  • Judicial power/functions

  • Electoral functions

  • Amendment powers

  • Legislative Functions: All laws are passed by parliament, whether ordinary bills or money bills.

  • Executive Functions : The most important function of the Parliament is to select the Executive. The Executive is a group of persons who work together to implement the laws made by Parliament.

  • Financial Functions : The Parliament controls the National purse. The money bill can only be introduced in the Lok Sabha. The Rajya Sabha can hold it only for 14 days.

  • Electoral Functions : Both the houses of the Parliament participate in the elections of the President and the Vice President. Each house elects its own officials.

  • Amendment Powers : The Parliament alone enjoys the power to amend the constitution. The amending proposal has to be passed in each house by a specific majority.
