Language played a very important role in developing nationalist sentiments. Though regional langauges brought some difficulties in the unification of country, therefore a common national langauge was adopted in many places.
• German Philosopher Johann Gottfried Herder stated that true German culture was to be discovered and the true spirit of nation ( Volkgeist ) was to be discovered among common people ( Das Volk ) because they have still kept their culture alive through their folk songs, folk poetry, dances, etc.
• In 1832 , a armed rebellion against Russian rule took place but it was considered and crushed. After the failure of this rebellion, members of clergy in Poland began to use language as the weapon of national resistance.
• Polish became the language of Church gatherings and all the religious instructions.
• Many priests and bishops who refused to preach in Russian were sent to Siberia and put behind the bars or were executed.
• Polish langauge was forced out of the school and Russian language was made obligatory.
