Role of Mouth in Digestion :
Digestion of food starts in the mouth with the help of saliva ,tongue and teeth.
Our teeth chew and break down the food into smaller pieces
For tearing , cutting and chewing of the food . There are four types of teeth : Incisors , Canine , Premolar and molar .
Incisors for bitting and cutting the food . Canines for tearing the food .Premolar and molar for crushing and grinding of food .
The saliva produced by Salivary gland is mixed with food by tongue .
The saliva contains enzymes called Salivary amylase which digests the starch and break down into sugar maltose
Saliva makes the food softer and easy to swallow.
There are a large number of small bud like structure present on our tongue called taste bud
Taste bud detect different tastes such as sweet , salt , sour and bitter .
In mouth the break down of starch into glucose is 30%
Mouth is also known as Buccal or oral cavity.
