when HCL acid is also secreted for the digestion process, the inner walls o the stomach should be protected.so mucus is secreted to protect the inner walls of stomach from HCL acid.

When Hcl is secreted by the inner walls of stomach then the sensitive epithelial cells may get destroyed,in order to protect them mucus is secreted which forms a layer on inner stomach and prevents damage
