Answer:

Oxygen is essential for respiration of living organisms, and it supports combustion because it is essential for burning components.

Burning of candles involves addition of oxygen to carbon & hydrogen which forms carbon dioxide , water vapour and energy in the form of heat and light.

Fuel + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + water vapour + Energy (heat and light)

Respiration involves inhaling oxygen to carbon & hydrogen present in food material which forms carbon dioxide , water vapor and energy in the form of heat.

Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + water vapour + Energy (heat)

ROLE OF OXYGEN IN,

  • Respiration

Oxygen serves as the final electron acceptor of the Electron Transport Chain. Thus, oxygen is essential for getting rid of low-energy electrons and hydrogen ions, the wastes of Cellular Respiration. Without oxygen, the Electron Transport Chain cannot function.

  • Combustion

During combustion, oxygen in the atmosphere combines with carbon atoms to produce carbon dioxide and hydrogen atoms to produce water. In fact, without oxygen, one cannot use these fuels for our daily needs. However, too much oxygen can cause uncontrolled burning and explosions. Even the tiniest spark can set off fires.
