Parliament is the supreme institution of the people and a symbol of freedom and sovereignty. It is an institution which performs various functions like:

 • Political and financial control

 • Representation and expression of grievances

 • Resolution of conflicts

 • National integration

In all democratic countries, an assembly of elected representatives has the power to govern on behalf of the people, and this assembly is called the Parliament. It makes new laws and can amend the constitution. It controls public finance.

The Parliament is also the highest forum of discussion and debate about national policy and issues affecting the people. Parliaments all over the world exercise control over those who govern the country.
