In 1907, Congress was split into two factions: The radicals, led by Tilak, advocated civil agitation and direct revolution to overthrow the British Empire and the abandonment of all things British.

Radicals played an important role in the freedom movement of India. They were led by Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal ( popularly known as Lal-Bal- Pal). They were in favour of more 'radical' objectives and methods. They called for strong political actions such as strikes , boycotts of British goods and mass demonstrations to spread awakening among people and to achieve political reforms.
